Music
Under the guidance of Music Specialist Mrs. Sian Fenn, students at St Thomas More explore music in a well-equipped, dedicated Music room. The music curriculum is delivered in a highly practical way, drawing on Mrs. Fenn’s extensive teaching experience across various schools, as well as her expertise as an accomplished flautist, band member and singing teacher.
Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of instruments, including acoustic and electric guitar, drums, electric bass, keyboards/piano, ukeleles and vocals, while also developing their understanding of music theory. They integrate technology into their learning by using iPads for recording and composition, utilising apps such as GarageBand to create their own music.
Starting in Kindergarten, students learn about rhythms, beats and musical notation, as well as how to improvise with musical elements to communicate ideas. They also listen to and explore music from different cultures and occasions.
School Band Program
Students in Years 4, 5, and 6 have the opportunity to join the School Band, where they learn a variety of instruments and vocal techniques. This program, led by Mr. Michael Goodwin, provides students with a hands-on experience of playing in a band and performing contemporary songs in a collaborative setting.
With over 25 years of experience as an award-winning songwriter, working musician, and instructor, Mr. Goodwin helps students develop their instrumental and performance skills. The program culminates in an end-of-year Music Concert, held at the Margaret River HEART Theatre.
Additionally, all students participate in fortnightly singing sessions, where they learn contemporary liturgical songs performed during school Masses.
Instrumental Program
St Thomas More offers an in-school Instrumental Tutoring Program, where students from Year 3 to Year 6 can choose to learn guitar, piano, drums, or voice with local musicians. Lessons take place during school hours, utilising break times to minimize classroom disruptions. Fees are set per term by the individual tutors.
